Es Grau

Located on the northeast coast of Menorca, just less than 9 kilometers from Mahon, the capital. Its main beach is characterized by its shallow depth which makes it ideal for young children, while teenagers love to snorkel, kayak and paddle around the bay.

What Does Es Grau special?

The beach is part of the S'Albufera des Grau natural park, so it is protected from overdevelopment. Among many other activities, you can swim, walk along the coastal path, go cycling, or row to the Illa d'en Colom. At Es Grau beach, the Mediterranean reaches knee-high to about 40 meters out to sea, like a gigantic pool-spa of blue water. People walk along the shore or walk slowly through the sea, absorbed in their conversation. To swim, you have to walk to the point where the water becomes deeper and takes on a dense bluish-green hue. The main beach, crescent-shaped with soft, dark sand, is half a kilometer long and is divided by a large ledge and a smaller cove. The fan-shaped coast is protected by the Illa d'en Colom, a large island near the mouth of the bay. Over there, there are two wonderful beaches (Arenal d'en Moro and Tamarells), which can be accessed by a small boat that transports people back and forth from the town pier.

Biosphere Reserve

A fence made up of a simple rope tied to various wooden posts divides Es Grau beach from the low dunes of the S'Albufera des Grau natural park. Stretching along the northeast coast of the island, this area of wetlands around a 2 kilometer long lake (S'Albufera), is the main reason why Menorca was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve a few years ago. It has been over two decades, a fortunate decision that has saved most of the island from overdevelopment.

A sandy path leads from the beach to the nature reserve, through information panels on flora and fauna at regular intervals. Following the signs to the lake, which attracts migratory birds in the spring and fall, and after only a 15-minute walk, it's easy to feel the tranquility of country life.

There are three short routes around the reserve, which are also part of the well-signposted Cami de Cavalls, the old horse trail that runs along the Menorcan coastline. The track, which links watchtowers and forts around the coast, was used by the British Army during its occupation in the 18th century, although it had existed for hundreds of years before. It was restored a few years ago, between 2009 and 2012, and is now the favorite place for tourists to walk, cycle or stroll along the coast.

From Es Grau beach, the Cami de Cavalls follows the winding coastline to the north, leading to a series of secret coves, including Cala des Tamarells and Cala de sa Torreta. As you stroll in the shade of olive and pine trees, yellow butterflies may accompany you. At the first viewpoint, don't forget to look towards the coast and you will see the Sa Torreta tower and the Cap de Favaritx lighthouse in the distance.

Fisher's village

Walking back along the beach and across the promenade bridge you arrive at the small fishing village where the Villa is. Most people in Es Grau are on vacation, but it doesn't really feel like a resort. There are a small number of bars and restaurants, a juice bar, a small supermarket and an elegant gift shop.

All the buildings are freshly whitewashed and sparkle in the evening sunlight. An open garage door reveals a small boat inside instead of a car; a canoe is hidden in the side alley of a house... Orange flowers bloom in the gardens.
